Dear Brothers and Sisters:
It is hard to believe the holiday season has arrived. Many of us will soon be attending family dinners and parties and beginning to plan our New Year’s resolution. For a moment, let us remember the history of Thanksgiving. In 1621, the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest in the New World with their families and Native American friends. It is well documented that there were 35 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans attending that first harvest festival of thanks. In 1863, some 242 years after that first celebration by the Pilgrims during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that this Nation’s celebration of thanks should be known as a National Day of Thanksgiving and praise to our Father in Heaven. Thus, began the Thanksgiving holiday on the last Thursday of each November. As we look at our country during this 2016 Holiday season, we can see that our belief in a Supreme Being, our principles of Virtue, Liberty and Patriotism are as important in today’s world as it was in 1853, when the Junior Order United American Mechanics was founded. Let us continue to share with those less fortunate the blessings God has so richly given each of us. In closing, I leave you with these thoughts and hope that each day, we take the time to say thank you to God, our family members and friends and above all, tell them how much you love them. Have a safe and happy holiday season and my personal wish to each for a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. Yours in V., L., & P., Dennis R. Everett National Councilor
